Epidaurus, Mycenae and Nafplio
Description
Epidaurus – The Ancient Theater of Perfect Acoustics
Our journey begins in the ancient city of Epidaurus, home to the world-famous Ancient Theater of Epidaurus. This masterpiece of Greek architecture is renowned for its exceptional acoustics, allowing even the softest sounds from the stage to be heard clearly by all 14,000 spectators, no matter where they are seated. A visit to this site offers a glimpse into the grandeur of ancient Greek performance and engineering.
Mycenae – The Kingdom of Agamemnon
Next, we travel to Mycenae, one of the most significant cities of the Mycenaean civilization in Argolida. Along with Tiryns, Mycenae’s imposing ruins reflect the power of a civilization that dominated the eastern Mediterranean from the 15th to the 12th century B.C. and played a crucial role in shaping classical Greek culture.
Mycenae was the legendary kingdom of Agamemnon, leader of the Greeks in the Trojan War. The city was once enclosed by massive cyclopean walls, with its most iconic landmark being the Lion Gate, a monumental entrance adorned with two sculpted lionesses, symbolizing strength and power.
Nafplion – The Romantic Seaside Town
Our final stop is in Nafplion, one of the most picturesque towns in mainland Greece. Walking through its narrow, paved streets, you’ll feel as if you’ve stepped back in time. For those seeking adventure, a climb up the 999 steps to Palamidi Fortress rewards you with breathtaking views of the sea.
At the entrance of the port lies Bourtzi, a small fortified islet, once used to protect the city from naval attacks. Nafplion is a city that combines history, charm, and stunning coastal beauty, making it the perfect ending to our tour.
